Pell Grants have no age limit, and for 2026-27 one pays up to $7,395 at full-time enrollment. The rules that decide it don’t change with age. Source · FSA, GEN-26-01 What counts is your income, your household and whether you already hold a bachelor’s degree.

Plenty of adults are weighing it. 58% of adults without a degree considered enrolling in the past two years, and 61% of those who stopped out call financial aid very important to going back. Source · Lumina-Gallup, May 12, 2026 Yet 30% of adults 25 and older aren’t sure they’re eligible for aid at all. Source · BestColleges, June 1, 2026

Age isn’t on the eligibility list

The FSA Handbook’s student eligibility rules check citizenship or eligible noncitizen status, a high school diploma or equivalent, enrollment in an eligible program, academic progress, financial need and whether you owe on a defaulted loan. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 1 Age is not one of them.

Age only shows up once on the FAFSA, and it works in your favor. If you were born before January 1, 2003, you file the 2026-27 form as an independent student. Source · 2026-27 SAI and Pell Eligibility Guide Your parents’ income and assets drop out entirely. Only yours count, plus your spouse’s if you’re married.

A full-time job doesn’t rule you out

Pell for adults turns on household income against the poverty guideline, not on whether you work. The 2026-27 form reads 2024 adjusted gross income (AGI). If it’s above $0 and at or below 175% of the 2024 guideline for your family size, or 225% for a single parent, you meet the test for the maximum award. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 2

Single-parent status follows your tax return. An unmarried parent counts when filing as head of household or qualifying surviving spouse, or when receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Your income dropped since 2024? Ask for a review

The 2026-27 FAFSA looks back to 2024. If you lost a job or your hours were cut since then, the form won’t show it. A financial aid administrator can adjust the data behind your Pell and SAI for special circumstances such as a job loss, case by case and with documents. The adjustment applies only at the school that makes it. Ask each school’s aid office, and bring proof of the change.

Three things stop adults more often than income

Old loans that are in good standing don’t count against Pell. Neither does an associate degree or credits you never finished.

Part time still pays

Most working adults study part time, and Pell follows your load. Enrollment intensity is your credits divided by the full-time load. Where full time is 12 credits, 9 credits pays 75% of your scheduled award and 6 credits pays 50%. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 3

Example: an adult with a scheduled award of $7,395 taking 6 credits a term would receive about $3,700 over the year. Taking classes year-round can raise that, since a school can pay up to 150% of the scheduled award in one award year.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit for Pell Grants?

No. The federal eligibility rules set no age limit. Adults qualify on the same income, household and degree rules as anyone else.

Can I get a Pell Grant if I work full time?

Yes, if your household income is within the limits. A single parent of two meets the 2026-27 maximum-Pell income test with 2024 AGI up to $58,095. Above that, your SAI sets the amount.

Do my parents’ income count if I’m 30?

No. For 2026-27, anyone born before January 1, 2003 files as independent. Only your income and your spouse’s count.

I got Pell years ago and dropped out. Can I get it again?

Yes, if you have lifetime eligibility left and no default or unresolved overpayment. Pell’s limit is 12 semesters or the equivalent, and the clock counts what you used before.

Your next step is your own number

The income lines tell you which test applies. The aid check runs them on your household and state and adds the state grant and federal loan limits that come with your result.
