Pell scales with your course load. At a school where full time is 12 credits, a student taking 6 credits is at 50% enrollment intensity and gets half the yearly Pell. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 3

For a student who qualifies for the 2026-27 maximum of $7,395, that’s about $3,698 for the year, or $1,849 a semester.

Your Pell is your credits divided by a full load

Schools call this enrollment intensity: your credits as a share of full time, rounded to the nearest whole percent. Seven credits out of 12, for example, is 58%. Full time must be at least 12 credits a term for undergraduates, and each school sets its own number. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 3

The school multiplies your full-time award by that percentage to get your yearly Pell, then splits it across the year’s two semesters. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 5, Example 5

Part time changes more than your Pell

Going below half time affects your other aid differently from Pell. Here is how one class, two classes and a full load compare.

What your course load means for federal aid

Under half time

One class

Pell

Direct Loans
No. Loans need at least half time
Lifetime Pell used

Direct Loans require at least half-time enrollment. Source · StudentAid.gov, Direct Loans Pell has no such floor, and a smaller award uses less of the six full-time years of Pell you get in a lifetime. Our lifetime limit guide explains how that share is counted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Pell for one class?

Yes. Pell pays at any course load, scaled to your credits. One 3-credit class at a 12-credit school is 25% of full time.

Why is my Pell half of what my friend gets?

Often it’s the course load. Two classes out of a four-class full load pays half. Your income, household and Student Aid Index matter too.

Does part time make my degree take longer?

At 6 credits a term, a 120-credit bachelor’s takes 20 semesters from scratch. Summer terms shorten it, and year-round Pell can pay for them.
