When would you like to start school?

Why we ask: Your start date picks the FAFSA year, and each year has its own age cutoff.

Review the methodology behind this result

Results are shown before email capture or partner handoff. The estimate uses source-backed rules and public data so you can evaluate the result before taking the next step.

For the 2027-28 FAFSA, you are an independent student if you were born before January 1, 2004. For 2026-27, the date is January 1, 2003. The date moves one year with each FAFSA. Which FAFSA you file depends on when you start; our guide on filing the 2027-28 FAFSA early has the start-date table. Source · 2027-28 SAI and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide, Appendix B

Independent students report only their own income, and a spouse’s if married. Parents’ income stays off the form, which is often the difference between a small Pell Grant and the full award.

What does not make you independent

The FAFSA does not count any of these on their own: living apart from parents; parents not claiming the student on their tax return; parents refusing to provide their information. A student under the age cutoff who lives alone and pays every bill is still a dependent student unless one of the questions above applies. Source · StudentAid.gov, Dependency Status

If you have no contact with your parents

Some students can’t reach a parent safely, for example after leaving an abusive home. The FAFSA lets you file as provisionally independent. The school’s financial aid administrator then reviews your situation and decides on a dependency override, usually with documentation from a counselor, social worker or other third party. Independent students can borrow more

Federal Direct Loan limits are higher for independent students. The extra room is unsubsidized, so interest builds while you’re in school. Source · StudentAid.gov, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans

Annual Direct Loan limits for undergraduates
Year in school Dependent student Independent student
First year $5,500 $9,500
Third year and beyond $7,500 $12,500

Borrowing is a choice, not a goal. Grants come first, and the aid check shows them before any loan.
