You can receive up to 150% of your yearly Pell Grant in one award year by taking classes year-round. At the 2026-27 maximum of $7,395, that’s up to $11,092 for a fall, spring and summer at full time. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 5

The rule is called year-round Pell. Without it, a student who used the full award in fall and spring would get nothing for summer.

Summer pays the same way fall and spring do

Year-round Pell doesn’t raise what you get each term. Each payment is calculated the usual way, from your award and your course load. What changes is the yearly ceiling, from 100% of your award to 150%. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 5

At a semester school, a full-time term pays half the yearly award. So a full-time summer after a full-time fall and spring adds half a year’s Pell.

A year-round student at the 2026-27 maximum Pell ($7,395), semester calendar
Term Course load Pell Share of yearly award used
Fall Full time $3,698 50%
Spring Full time $3,697 100%

The handbook’s own example rounds the cents down on the summer payment so the total stays at or under 150%. A half-time summer would pay about half as much, roughly $1,848 at the maximum.

Summer Pell comes out of your lifetime limit

You can receive Pell for about six years of full-time school, tracked as 600% of a yearly award. Year-round students stay under that same lifetime limit. Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 5 A summer term uses up Pell the same way a fall term does.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new FAFSA for summer?

It depends on which award year your school puts summer in. A summer at the start of an award year needs that year’s FAFSA, so file both years if you’re not sure.

Can I get year-round Pell part time?

Yes. Each term’s Pell is set by your course load, and the year can still reach 150% of your award. See our part-time Pell guide for the numbers.

Does year-round Pell work in short programs?

Yes. The handbook’s examples include a clock-hour program. Your third payment period can be paid from the extra 50% once you’ve used your full yearly award.
