For 2026-27, Pell is a grant for nursing school you don’t have to repay, up to $7,395 for a full-time year if you don’t already hold a bachelor’s, while the nursing scholarships we checked are repaid with nursing work after you graduate. Source · FSA, 2026-27 Pell amounts

See your Pell estimate before you apply to nursing programs
About two minutes, and your result shows before any email. Pell for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28), your state's main grant where it may apply, and loan limits. Nursing scholarships aren't in it.
Check my aidThat gives three groups: grants you don’t repay (Pell and FSEOG, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. A federal grant your school awards to students with the most need, Pell Grant recipients first. Not every school takes part.), scholarships you repay with nursing work (Nurse Corps and the state programs), and loan repayment once you are licensed (Nurse Corps Loan Repayment). Every 2026 student window we checked has closed.
If you are putting your own hard-earned money in this time, know the cost of a mistake first. Under Nurse Corps and Illinois’ nursing scholarship, leaving school or skipping the work means repaying the award plus interest.
The states are the three whose agency pages we read on October 27, 2026, Illinois, California and Maryland, not every state. The financial aid hub has more grant guides.

Pell pays only if you don’t hold a bachelor’s
Federal Student Aid’s rule is short: “A student who has earned a bachelor’s degree is not eligible to receive a Pell Grant, unless the student is enrolled in a postbaccalaureate teacher certification program or eligible workforce program.” Source · FSA Handbook 2026-27, Vol. 7, Ch. 1
So Pell can go toward an associate degree in nursing or a first BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A bachelor’s degree in nursing. Registered nurses can earn it in an RN-to-BSN program.. It pays nothing toward an accelerated second-degree BSN or a master’s. Pell after a first bachelor’s covers the two exceptions.
Pell “does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances,” StudentAid.gov says, and you file the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The free federal form for grants, federal student loans and work-study. Most states and schools use it for their own aid too. every year you’re in school to keep it. Below full time it shrinks: FSA ties the yearly award to your enrollment intensity, your share of a full-time load. How Pell, FSEOG and state grants stack has the full rules.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) adds $100 to $4,000 a year for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. “Not all schools participate,” StudentAid.gov says, so ask each nursing school’s aid office. Source · StudentAid.gov, FSEOG
Nurse Corps pays tuition and a stipend for at least two years of work
HRSA’s Nurse Corps Scholarship Program pays “your tuition, fees, and other educational costs, along with a monthly stipend.” In return, “after you graduate, you work at an eligible health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.”
For 2026-27 the stipend is $1,642 a month for each full-time student. Source · HRSA, Nurse Corps SP guidance 2026-27
The commitment, in HRSA’s words: “All participants incur, at a minimum, a two-year full-time service obligation (or part-time equivalent), but will have a longer service obligation if they receive support for more than two years.” Three school years of support means three years of work, and four means four. Full-time service is at least 32 hours a week for at least 45 weeks a year.
Who can apply, from HRSA’s 2026-27 guidance and apply page:
- You are enrolled or accepted “as a full-time student in an accredited nursing degree program in clinical nursing.” Diploma, associate, bachelor’s and graduate programs count, including bridge and direct-entry programs.
- You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident, and you begin classes by September 30.
- You have no existing service commitment, no federal judgment lien and no overdue federal debt.
HRSA gives “funding preference to those who need the most help financially,” measured by the Student Aid Index on your FAFSA Submission Summary. The whole award is taxable, stipend included.
The 2026 cycle is closed: applications opened March 10, 2026 and closed April 9, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. ET, and HRSA said every applicant would hear by September 30, 2026. Its apply page says it will email subscribers “when next year’s application cycle opens” and gives no date yet.
Illinois, California and Maryland pay nursing students who then work in the state
Illinois. ISAC’s scholarship covers part of tuition and fees, plus a living allowance for full-time students, but not prerequisite courses.
In return, “you must begin full- or part-time employment as a licensed practical or registered professional nurse, an advanced practice registered nurse, or a nurse educator in Illinois within 12 months of graduating, and remain employed for a period equivalent to the educational time supported by the scholarship.”
California. HCAI’s two scholarships draw on about $195,000 (BSN) and $50,000 (associate degree) statewide. Each asks for “a one year service obligation providing at least 32 hours per week of direct patient care in an underserved area or qualifying facility starting within six months of graduation.”
Maryland. “Recipients must be employed as a nurse in a Maryland licensed hospital, adult day care center, nursing home, public health agency, home health agency, an eligible institution of postsecondary education that awards nursing degrees or diplomas, or other organization authorized by the Department of Health Secretary.”
MHEC’s 2025-26 page sets the length: “one year for each year that you received the scholarship” if you work full time, and two years for each year if you work part time. Source · MHEC, 2025-26 WSSAG
Maryland’s program is called a grant and still carries that work commitment. Read the terms, not the name.
Two state “nursing grants” you may find are not student aid at all. Illinois’ Competitive Grant for Nursing Schools goes to nursing schools for retention programs, faculty and clinical space. Georgia’s Nursing Schools Grant pays up to $500,000 to nursing programs; both go to schools, not to students.
Leaving early turns a service scholarship into a debt with interest
Example: one BSN year in Illinois adds up to $26,251 at the maximums, by our math
Example: you live in Illinois, have no bachelor’s yet, and start a BSN at a four-year college full time in 2026-27.

Illinois Nursing Education Scholarship
Up to $18,856, ISAC’s 2026-27 maximum for a BSN at a four-year college, if you are awarded it. -
Add them

Count what you owe back
Nothing for Pell. For the scholarship, nursing work in Illinois as long as the years it paid, starting within 12 months of graduating, or the full amount plus 7% a year.
The 2026-27 NES cycle closed with an extended deadline of May 31, 2026. Congress has not set the 2027-28 Pell maximum, so the aid check uses the 2026-27 Pell amounts for a 2027-28 start.
Graduate nursing students: no Pell, but Nurse Corps and two states fund master’s programs
With a bachelor’s, Pell is closed. Nurse Corps funds graduate nurse practitioner programs, including psychiatric mental health NP post-graduate certificates and nurse-midwifery, in its first tier, and nurse anesthesia (CRNA) and clinical nurse specialist programs in its second.
Illinois’ scholarship covers a graduate nursing degree for up to five years, at up to $18,856 for 2026-27. Maryland’s grant pays graduate students $4,000 a year at a four-year school when they take 9 or more credits a semester.
For what a master’s in nursing lets you borrow, see the graduate nursing loan limits. Once you are licensed, Nurse Corps Loan Repayment pays 60% of qualifying nursing loans over two years of work, up to 85% with a third year; programs colleges run for their own graduates are in colleges with loan repayment assistance.
Every 2026 student window we checked has closed, so file the 2027-28 FAFSA
The table above gives each window as the agency states it. The 2027-28 FAFSA is open now, for school between July 1, 2027, and June 30, 2028.
For 2026-27, Nurse Corps ranked applicants by the SAI, Student Aid Index. The number your FAFSA produces. Schools use it to work out your Pell Grant and other need-based aid: the lower it is, the more aid you can get. on the FAFSA Submission Summary, Illinois required the FAFSA (or ISAC’s Alternative Application, if applicable), and Maryland used it to order awards. If nursing is still a plan, the routes into nursing after 40 show which program to aim these applications at.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Nurse Corps scholarship taxable?
Yes. HRSA says “Your entire scholarship award is taxable,” and its 2026-27 guidance says all components, tuition, fees, other costs and the stipend, are taxed as income.
Can I get Pell for an accelerated BSN?
Not if you already hold a bachelor’s. FSA’s rule closes Pell after a first bachelor’s except in teacher certification and eligible workforce programs. Before you count on Nurse Corps or Illinois’ scholarship for a second-degree BSN, ask the program, and remember both carry a work commitment.
Can I keep working and study part time with Nurse Corps?
Not as a part-time student. HRSA requires full-time enrollment. Pell pays a smaller amount part time, Illinois’ scholarship keeps its living allowance for full-time students, and Maryland’s grant pays part-time students half the full-time amount.
Do I need the FAFSA for these?
For the federal grants, yes, every year. For 2026-27, Nurse Corps ranked applicants by the SAI the FAFSA produces, and Illinois required the FAFSA or, if applicable, ISAC’s Alternative Application. Maryland’s application doesn’t require it, but MHEC uses it to decide who gets an award first.
