Adults 24 and older skip the parent section

For 2027-28 you file as an independent student if you were born before January 1, 2004. Being married, a veteran, on active duty, a graduate student or supporting a child of your own also makes you independent, whatever your age. Source · 2027-28 SAI and Pell Eligibility Guide

Independent means no parent income and no parent signature. If you’re married, your spouse joins the form as a contributor, and the new form lets you invite a spouse or parent by QR code. Source · NASFAA, Sept. 24, 2026

The income lines for the maximum Pell Grant are already set from the 2025 poverty guidelines. A single adult with no children meets the 2027-28 maximum-Pell income test with 2025 AGI above $0 and up to $27,388. A single parent of two meets it up to $59,963.

October filers get state money spring filers can miss

Pell has no first-come rule. Some state grants do. For 2027-28, StudentAid.gov lists Illinois, Kentucky and Oregon as awarding as soon as possible after October 1, 2026, until funds run out. Source · StudentAid.gov, FAFSA deadlines

Illinois shows the cost of waiting. For 2026-27, the state stopped announcing Monetary Award Program grants for FAFSAs received after April 23, 2026. Source · ISAC: MAP MAP pays up to $8,400 a year. Other states set hard dates: Texas asks for the 2027-28 form by January 15, 2027, and California by March 2, 2027.

Your school’s own aid can be first-come too. Lumina-Gallup found that 72% of 2025-26 FAFSA filers said their aid affected where they enrolled. Source · Lumina-Gallup, May 12, 2026 An early offer gives you time to compare.

The form takes minutes, and shows your result right away

The 2027-28 form gives most filers their Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell eligibility within minutes of submitting, and it shows an earnings indicator for each school you list. Source · ED Homeroom, Sept. 24, 2026 If you filed during the beta, you don’t need to file again.

  1. Create your StudentAid.gov account

You and any contributor (a spouse, or parents if you are dependent) each need one.

  2. Consent to the IRS data transfer

The form pulls your 2025 tax information directly. If you didn’t have to file a 2025 return, you can still complete it; non-filers are assigned the lowest SAI, -1,500.

  3. List every school you're weighing

Each school you list gets your results and can build an aid offer. You can change the list later.

  4. Check your SAI on the confirmation

An SAI of 0 or below generally means the maximum Pell. Twice the maximum Pell or more rules Pell out.
