With a 40-hour job, each 3-credit class adds about 9 hours a week: one class makes a 49-hour week and two make 58. Two classes (6 credits) is also half time at a school where full time is 12 credits, the line for federal student loans.

The 9 hours come from the federal definition of a credit hour: one hour of class “and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks” for each credit. Source · 34 CFR 600.2 Three credits times three hours is 9.

Plenty of people carry that load: in 2020, 40% of part-time undergraduates worked 35 hours a week or more. Source · NCES

The federal rule sets a minimum for how schools award credit, so some courses take more. Treat these numbers as a floor when you plan.

Two classes is where federal loans open up

Two classes is where a 40-hour week and school still fit in about 58 hours, and it’s also the point where federal loans open up and Pell reaches half. One class is easier to fit, but it pays a quarter of Pell and no loans.

Four classes means 76 hours a week, a second full-time job on top of the first. Full-time students are less likely to work long hours: in 2020, 10% of full-time undergraduates worked 35 hours or more, against 40% of part-time students. Source · NCES

An 8-week class takes about twice the hours a week

Some online programs run 8-week terms. The credit-hour rule allows the same work “over a different period of time,” so a 3-credit class still takes about 135 hours. Source · 34 CFR 600.2 Packed into 8 weeks instead of 15, that’s about 17 hours a week for one class.

One 8-week class at a time is about the same weekly load as two semester classes (17 hours against 18), and you finish each course in about half the weeks.

Pick your load in four steps

  1. Count your free hours honestly

List your work, commute and family time for a normal week. What’s left is your school budget.

  2. Divide by 9

Each 3-credit semester class takes about 9 hours a week. An 8-week class takes about 17.

  3. Check where you land on aid

If you’re one class short of half time, ask whether the extra class is worth the Pell and loan access it brings. The Time-to-Degree Calculator shows both for the hours you enter.

  4. Start lighter than you think

Pass your first term, then add a class. A finished course beats a dropped one, and withdrawing can affect your aid.

Frequently asked questions

Is one class a semester worth it?

It moves you forward and pays a quarter of Pell, but there are no federal loans below half time. At 6 credits a term, a 120-credit bachelor’s takes 20 semesters from scratch, so transfer credit and summer terms matter.

Do online classes take less time?

Not by the credit-hour rule. The same credits mean the same work, online or in person.

Can I go full time while working full time?

Some do, but four classes add about 36 hours a week. In 2020, 10% of full-time undergraduates worked 35 hours a week or more, against 40% of part-time students.

Your next step is a finish date

Pick the load that fits your week, then put it into the Time-to-Degree Calculator with the credits you already have. It shows the month you’d finish at that pace.

Turn your hours into a finish date

The Time-to-Degree Calculator turns your weekly hours and the credits you have into a finish month, with your share of Pell at that load.
