Check your aid before you choose Columbia Southern
Your Pell estimate, a possible state grant, campus-based aid and federal loan limits under the rules for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28). About two minutes, before any email. Columbia Southern's financial aid office sets your actual offer.
Check my aidIts tuition and fees are lower, $6,472 for 2025-26 ($278 a credit for undergraduate courses), because net price also counts food, housing and other living costs.
If you are paying with your own money this time, the fear is losing it on courses you do not finish. At the posted rate, one 3-credit undergraduate course costs $834 in tuition plus a $35 technology fee, by our math, and Columbia Southern says textbooks come at no additional cost.
Columbia Southern, in Orange Beach, Alabama, teaches every program online. Its largest fields by awards in 2023-24 were business, safety and fire protection.

Columbia Southern charges $278 a credit, and its net price adds living costs
| Course level | Tuition per credit hour | CSU Learning Partner rate |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | $278 | $250.20 |
| Graduate | $359 | $323.10 |
| Doctoral | $561 | $504.90 |
The full rates took effect July 1, 2025, after a 3% increase, and are still the posted rates. On top of tuition, the technology fee is $35 per undergraduate course and $45 per graduate course, and the petition to graduate costs $100. The application fee is $0.
College Scorecard lists $6,472 in tuition and fees for 2025-26, the same for in-state and out-of-state students.
Its average net price, $15,834 for 2024-25 for full-time first-time students with federal aid, is higher because net price is the full cost of attendance minus grants. College Navigator’s definition of that cost adds books, food and housing, and other expenses to tuition.
| Family income | Average net price, 2024-25 |
|---|---|
| $0 to $30,000 | $15,131 |
| $30,001 to $48,000 | $14,793 |
| $48,001 to $75,000 | $16,168 |
| $75,001 to $110,000 | $15,722 |
| $110,001 and up | $19,961 |
Scorecard’s average rests on 127 full-time, first-time undergraduates who got federal aid in 2024-25, while 34% of undergraduates studied part-time in fall 2024. For 2026-27, Pell pays up to $7,395 a year to eligible undergraduates, and 32% of Columbia Southern undergraduates had a Pell Grant in 2024-25.
Transfer credits set the bill: up to 90 can count toward a bachelor’s
The B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health and the B.S. in Fire Administration each take 120 credits and list a maximum of 90 transfer credits. Columbia Southern’s registrar decides which credits count, and the school says transferring credits “does not guarantee reduced tuition or amount of courses.”
| Credits transferred in | Credits left | Tuition | Technology fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 120 | 120 x $278 = $33,360 | 40 x $35 = $1,400 |
| 60 | 60 | 60 x $278 = $16,680 | 20 x $35 = $700 |
| 90, the program maximum | 30 | 30 x $278 = $8,340 | 10 x $35 = $350 |
Add the $100 petition to graduate in each case. With 90 credits accepted, the last 30 credits come to $8,790 by our math. Columbia Southern says most of its courses are 3 credit hours and it considers professional licenses, certificates and training programs for credit.

Business, safety and fire are Columbia Southern’s largest fields
These are Columbia Southern’s seven largest fields by awards in 2023-24, all offered fully online. Field names are federal Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) categories, not the school’s program titles.
| Field and credential | Awards, 2023-24 | Median earnings, 4 yrs after | Median federal debt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Administration, Management and Operations (master's) | 1,086 | $79,103 | $46,790 |

| Business Administration, Management and Operations (bachelor's) | 782 | $69,343 | $27,550 |
| Quality Control and Safety Technologies/Technicians (bachelor's) | 739 | $94,480 | $28,463 |
| Fire Protection (associate) | 587 | $88,114 | $10,027 |

| Quality Control and Safety Technologies/Technicians (associate) | 458 | $87,340 | $16,750 |
In the federal CIP list, “Quality Control and Safety Technologies/Technicians” includes Occupational Safety and Health Technology. “Fire Protection” includes Fire Services Administration and Fire Science/Fire-fighting.
The business master’s carries the highest median debt in the table. Our guide to the online business administration degree compares that field’s cost and pay across schools.
The occupational safety bachelor’s can lead to a BCSP exam waiver
The B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health is a Qualified Academic Program of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). Its graduates may apply for BCSP’s Graduate Safety Practitioner designation.
Columbia Southern says that designation allows “a waiver for the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) examination requirement in pursuit of their Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation.”
The B.S. in Fire Administration is recognized by Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) through the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy.
The school notes that “many fire science employers take into account the following factors when determining eligibility for employment: physical health, U.S. citizenship, criminal background screening, work experience and education.”
| Program | Credits | Most transfer credits | Recognition named |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.S. Occupational Safety and Health | 120 | 90 | BCSP Qualified Academic Program |
| A.S. Occupational Safety and Health | 60 | 45 | None named |
| B.S. Fire Administration | 120 | 90 | FESHE, through the National Fire Academy |
Each of these program pages says the program “is not designed to meet the educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification required for employment in an occupation,” and that “CSU does not guarantee a job, promotion, salary increase, eligibility for a position, or other career growth.”
Active-duty students using tuition assistance pay $250 a credit hour
Columbia Southern’s “tuition rate for associate, bachelor’s and master’s courses is $250 per credit hour for all active-duty military members using tuition assistance,” except those using a Learning Partner discount.
The school says the lower rate keeps tuition “at the DoD cap of $250,” and it waives the technology fee for active-duty members. On that rate, the last 30 credits of a bachelor’s cost 30 x $250 = $7,500 in tuition, by our math.
In 2023-24, 2,054 undergraduates and 1,299 graduate students received DoD Tuition Assistance through Columbia Southern, and 1,683 undergraduates and 742 graduate students used the Post-9/11 GI Bill (College Navigator).
Spouses and children of active-duty members get a 10% tuition discount. See our guide to military tuition assistance in 2026.
Who Columbia Southern fits, and the watch-outs
It fits if
- You want a safety or fire degree studied fully online. The B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health is a BCSP Qualified Academic Program, and the B.S. in Fire Administration is recognized by FESHE.
- You pay course by course. At $278 a credit, a 3-credit course is $834 in tuition plus the $35 fee, with textbooks included, and payment plans run weekly, biweekly or monthly.
- You bring credits. Up to 90 can count toward a 120-credit bachelor’s, and at 90 the example above leaves $8,790 for the last 30 credits.
Watch-outs
- Completion. Only 49% of 2017-18 starters earned an award within eight years, and 30% of the fall 2019 first-time, full-time cohort graduated within six.
- The net price is not the lowest. At $15,834 for 2024-25 for full-time first-time students with federal aid, it was above APUS and WGU in the table above.
- A degree is not a license or a job. The safety and fire program pages say they are “not designed to meet the educational requirements for a specific professional license” and that “CSU does not guarantee a job, promotion, salary increase”. Check what your employer or state asks for.
- Dropping late costs money. After the 7-day drop date, a one-time registration fee applies, up to $200 per degree program, and fees are non-refundable.
