In 2026, a 120-credit online accounting bachelor’s can lead to a CPA license in six of the seven states we checked, from each state’s own date (California’s and Illinois’s is January 1, 2027), with two years of experience instead of the one year the model 150-hour route asks for. The state board decides who is licensed.

See whether an accounting degree pays back at your pay
Pick Business / Management, then accountants and auditors. Enter the yearly tuition, the years it takes and your pay now. It uses BLS May 2025 pay. Free, no sign-up.
See my break-even yearIn Minnesota, candidates can qualify as of January 1, 2026 and may apply on or after January 2, 2026. Ohio’s route applies if you first sit for the CPA exam on or after January 1, 2026. Texas’s started August 1, 2026, New York’s starts November 21, 2026, and California’s and Illinois’s start January 1, 2027.
Florida, the seventh, has a licensing page that, read October 27, 2026, lists 150 semester hours and one year of work experience. We read each state’s own board page on October 27, 2026.
You are paying with your own money this time, so 30 credits you may not need is a cost worth checking. The trade is one more year of work experience. More programs by field are on the online degrees hub.
Six of the seven boards we checked list a bachelor’s-plus-two-years route
NASBA and the AICPA publish the model law that states can adopt. In 2025 they added a “New 120-Hour Pathway”: “Bachelor’s degree in accounting (120 semester hours) + two (2) years of professional experience + passing the CPA Exam.”
NASBA also says “individual jurisdictions must formally enact legislation to adopt the new models,” and that “Implementation dates vary.”
So the model is not the law where you live. Here is what each board we checked says, in its own words where the rule matters.
| State | From | The bachelor's route, in the board's words | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ohio | January 1, 2026 | "A bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration and two years of relevant experience" | Applies if you first sit for the CPA exam on or after January 1, 2026 |
| Minnesota | January 1, 2026 (apply on or after January 2, 2026) | "Bachelor's degree + 2 years of experience" | The 150-hour route "will sunset on June 30, 2030" |
| Texas | August 1, 2026 | "Bachelor's degree, 120 semester hours of college credit, and two years of work experience" | The work must be supervised by a CPA |
| New York | November 21, 2026 | 120 semester hours and "at least two years of full-time experience, or the part-time equivalent" | Not yet in effect on October 27, 2026 |
| California | January 1, 2027 | A bachelor's with "an accounting concentration of courses" and "Two years of general accounting experience" | Old and new rules are both valid in 2027 and 2028 |
| Illinois | January 1, 2027 | "A bachelor's degree in accounting; and two years of qualifying professional experience" | The requirements "may change before the rules are formally adopted" |
| Florida | No new route listed | The licensing page lists 150 semester hours and one year of work experience | As read October 27, 2026 |
Illinois also warns that meeting its rules “does not guarantee that you will meet the requirements for initial licensure in another state.” Check the board in the state where you plan to work.
The 150-hour line is still printed on federal and school pages
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) handbook page for accountants, last modified August 27, 2026, still says: “All states require CPA candidates to complete 150 semester hours of college coursework to be licensed, which is 30 hours more than the usual 4-year bachelor’s degree.”
Southern New Hampshire University’s (SNHU) accounting page, read October 27, 2026, also uses the 150 figure. It says its bachelor’s “can support 120 of the 150 credit hours most individuals need for exam eligibility in most states.”
Its licensure note adds that the bachelor’s alone “will not satisfy complete educational eligibility to sit for the CPA licensure exam or to become licensed certified public accountants in most jurisdictions.”
The boards above state their routes and dates on their own pages. When a federal or school page and your board’s page disagree, your board’s page is the rule.
Thirty fewer credits trade for one more year of work experience
Example (hypothetical): you live in Texas, have 60 credits a school accepts, and apply for the CPA certificate after August 1, 2026. Texas lists two routes: Pathway A, with 150 semester hours and one year of work experience, and Pathway B, with 120 semester hours and two years. Priced at SNHU’s $354 a credit, by our math:
| Texas route | Credits left | Tuition | Work experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pathway B: bachelor's and 120 semester hours | 60 | $21,240 | Two years, supervised by a CPA |
| Pathway A: degree and 150 semester hours | 90 | $31,860 | One year |
Pathway B costs $10,620 less in tuition, by our math, and asks for one more year of work. Texas says that work must be “full time non-routine accounting work experience that is directly supervised by a CPA,” so the extra year is spent in an accounting job, not in school.
Texas also asks for at least 27 upper-level accounting hours and 24 upper-level business hours, including an ethics course, for a Pathway B certificate. Whether your courses count is the board’s call, and what transfers is the school’s call. See how many credits transfer before you count on 60.
Accounting bachelor’s grads of 2017-18 and 2018-19 earned a $76,194 median
College Scorecard’s October 15, 2026 release puts the national median for accounting bachelor’s graduates (Accounting and Related Services, CIP 52.03) at $76,194. That is for graduates who finished in 2017-18 or 2018-19, paid in 2022 and 2023, in 2024 dollars.
For master’s graduates in the same field and years, the median is $95,833. By our comparison, that is a different group of people, so the gap is not what a master’s adds for you.
Accounting is a separate field from business administration (CIP 52.02), which has its own figures in the online business administration degree guide.
Of the 1,224 schools reporting an accounting bachelor’s, 162 say every credential in the field can be finished fully online, by Scorecard’s distance-education flag. These are the ten of them with the most awards in 2023-24.
| School | Median pay, 4 years out | Median federal debt | Awards 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colorado State University Global (public) | $75,415 | $26,750 | 157 |
| Purdue University Global (public) | $62,502 | $34,689 | 239 |
| University of Arkansas (public) | $84,097 | $21,500 | 164 |
| University of Houston-Downtown (public) | $67,499 | $18,000 | 242 |
| University of Maryland Global Campus (public) | $76,478 | $17,343 | 208 |
| University of South Florida (public) | $78,918 | $13,133 | 255 |
| Franklin University (private nonprofit) | $65,816 | $19,000 | 150 |
| Liberty University (private nonprofit) | $63,307 | $24,839 | 198 |
| Western Governors University (private nonprofit) | $75,767 | $15,102 | 1,310 |
| University of Phoenix-Arizona (private for-profit) | $63,113 | $36,722 | 397 |
Pay is for graduates who finished in 2017-18 or 2018-19, paid in 2022 and 2023 (2024 dollars). Debt is the median federal loan debt of 2022-23 and 2023-24 graduates. Each row covers every accounting program the school reports, online and campus graduates together, and is not a forecast of your pay.
BLS says a CPA license may improve job prospects; SEC filings require one
BLS, Bureau of Labor Statistics. The U.S. Department of Labor agency that publishes pay and job outlook figures for each occupation. put the median for accountants and auditors at $83,680 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all occupations. One in ten earned less than $56,020, and one in ten more than $144,090.
BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education, and “None” for work experience in a related occupation. Its words on the license: “Completing certification in a specific field of accounting, such as becoming a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), may improve job prospects.”
BLS names one kind of work that requires the license: “Any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is required to be a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).” BLS also notes that “Employers may pay the costs associated with the CPA exam.”
BLS projects 5 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, against 3 percent for all occupations, and about 115,300 openings a year. For how accounting pay compares with other degrees, see the highest-paying online degrees.
Whether the degree pays back depends on what you earn now and the price you pay.
Your board, not your school, decides whether the degree counts
None of the nine board pages we read for these seven states sets a separate rule for online courses. What they name is the degree, the hours, the school’s accreditation or recognition, and the experience.
Texas asks for a bachelor’s “completed at a Board-recognized educational institution.” California says it “will not be recognizing colleges or universities, so students will have the flexibility to attend the accredited school of their choosing.”
New York’s 120-hour route takes one of two kinds of education: a program the state registers as licensure qualifying, or “a bachelor’s or higher degree in accounting or its equivalent from a college or university that is accredited by one of the accrediting agencies listed,” with set accounting and business hours.
Its “List of Acceptable Institutional Accrediting Agencies” names eight, including the Higher Learning Commission and the New England Commission of Higher Education.
For what those agency names mean now, see regional vs national accreditation.
Federal aid can lower the price side
Pell Grants pay up to $7,395 for 2026-27 to undergraduates who qualify.
Western Governors University (WGU) charges $3,850 per six-month term for its B.S. Accounting, for terms from October 1, 2026, so two terms, one year, cost $7,700 by our math. That is a one-year figure, not the price of the whole degree.
Four checks before you enroll
-
Read your state board's page
Note the date your route starts and what it asks for. NASBA keeps a list of states that adopted new routes, but says each candidate is responsible for knowing “each jurisdiction Board’s current laws and rules.”
-
Match the accounting hours
Ohio asks for 30 accounting and 24 business semester hours. Texas asks for at least 27 upper-level accounting and 24 upper-level business hours, with an ethics course. New York asks for 27 accounting and 30 business semester hours in listed content areas. Illinois’s two-year route asks for a bachelor’s degree in accounting (its rules are not final). California asks for “an accounting concentration of courses.” Ask the school for a course-by-course match to your board’s list, in writing.
-
Plan who signs for your experience
Texas and New York want the work supervised by a CPA. Ask an employer whether a CPA can sign for your hours.
-
Ask the school for its licensure disclosure
Ask for the one for your state before you enroll, and keep it in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you become a CPA with 120 credits?
In six of the seven states we checked, the board lists a route with a bachelor’s and two years of experience.
On October 27, 2026 it is in effect in Minnesota (candidates qualify as of January 1, 2026 and may apply on or after January 2, 2026), Ohio (if you first sit for the exam on or after January 1, 2026) and Texas (since August 1, 2026). Florida’s licensing page, read October 27, 2026, lists 150 semester hours.
Does an online accounting degree count toward a CPA license?
The board pages we read do not set a separate rule for online courses. They ask about the degree, the accounting hours and the school’s accreditation or recognition, so check those with your board.
How long does the 120-credit CPA path take?
The bachelor’s, the CPA exam and two years of experience. In Ohio, two years means 24 months and at least 4,000 hours.
Next step: run your own payback, then your aid
Put your current pay and one program’s yearly price into the ROI calculator, and read the payback at the median and at the 25th percentile.
Then run the aid check. It estimates a full-time Pell Grant and your federal loan limits under the rules for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28), so you can take them off the price. School matching comes after your result, and it is optional.
Degree Sources is not affiliated with any school listed, any board of accountancy or any government agency.
Take aid off the price before you pick a program
Free, about two minutes, no name, email or phone. A full-time Pell Grant estimate and federal loan limits for the year you start (2026-27 or 2027-28).
